Advertising has gotten out of control. I have seen some doozies from websites and billboards, but this one has me angry.
Free web-based email isn’t actually free – they serve advertisements. Some of them are plain and ordinary, some are annoying and inappropriate. Lately I have seen a bunch of ads for mortgages with some girl doing a silly dance. This is one of the annoying types of on-line ads, but it must have worked because I remembered it.
What in the world? Isn’t this crossing the line? To be fair, there is a clever video somebody made that has Obama and McCain dancing, but that clearly was an entertainment piece (here’s the link to go see it, very funny: Click here ). But using Obama’s likeness and a stupid dance to get me to click on an ad and try to get me to buy a mortgage is just plain wrong. By the way, the quote they have on the ad clearly is for an interest-only loan, which is an awful product and played a great part in the sub-prime mortgage problem we have in this country. Didn’t they get the memo?
So I am faced with this problem: What to do about it? Certainly this blog has only brought the advertiser more visibility, so the thought of trying to get them to stop advertising will be a hard sell. I’m willing to take suggestions, or even open a dialogue about how the advertising market has lost its soul. Leave me a comment and tell me what you think.
