Tomorrow I will be speaking to a group of managers and presenting awards to those who have achieved the highest results from the previous year. Traditionally, I would be using this time to speak about the ways these managers can improve their financial performance according to the company’s guidelines. But the performance of last year compared to previous years has been outstanding (results of my visits over the year are summarized in a numeric score, and scores were UP).
Instead, I have decided to spend the time reflecting on the fact that there were minimal changes last year but their average scores were impressive. The one discussion will be “what has changed”. These managers did not receive incredible raises which made them want to work harder or put in even more than the 60-70 hours they were already working. They did not receive more hours to allocate to labor. And the amount of paperwork they are required to file and retain has not been reduced in the least. So what was it?
I have some ideas, but will save the results from the meeting for a post on another day. In the meantime, I can not wait to pat these hard working business managers on the back.
